Cooperative Divorce

when you both have questions, want to be part of the process, and may need help working out details.

When you want to find solutions, even if you disagree, a cooperative divorce (aka dual representation) provides advantages of both uncontested divorce and mediation.

What is cooperative divorce?

With a cooperative divorce, you and your spouse work directly with Attorney Mediator Julie Ernst to develop divorce papers before filing in court. You are both kept in the loop from start to finish. Both of you can ask questions or for help anytime.

If you disagree on details of custody, parenting time, child support, alimony, debt or property division, Attorney Mediator Julie Ernst will work with you over the phone or by live virtual video meeting (Zoom). If you’re unsure using the technology, don’t worry, we’ll walk you through it.

Advantages of cooperative divorce:

  1. Helps reluctant spouses feel more comfortable.

  2. Preserves extended family and co-parenting relationships.

  3. Avoids reinventing the wheel—you get access to decades of experience helping couples reach agreement on the toughest and most emotional issues.

  4. Avoids stress of high conflict litigation.

  5. Saves time by avoiding lengthy and repeated court calendars.

  6. Saves money using one lawyer who encourages agreement, instead of paying two lawyers who earn more the longer you fight.

  7. Gets you access to our Divorce Resource Library, videos and worksheets developed by Attorney Julie Ernst explaining everything you need to know to make informed decisions.

Our Georgia Divorce Law Resource Library includes:

  • When and how alimony is calculated,

  • How child support works and how to use the online calculator,

  • Different types of custody,

  • Deciding what parenting time works best for your children with a variety of example parenting time schedules,

  • Ways courts treat separate and premarital property,

  • Ways to divide debts,
